The reno journey begins
Villas are one of the quintessential Kiwi home styles we all love and adore. Many of these older homes around NZ are in desperate need of TLC - which can be a bit of work, but very rewarding. Sarah and her family, from Cambridge, have embarked on renovating and refreshing their own beautiful 100 year old villa.
Sarah and her family have plans to renovate their entire home, but first stop, their main bathroom. Her bathroom renovation has had a full facelift, with the final result balancing both a classic and contemporary look. To say we are in love with the transformation would be an understatement! We ask Sarah how she chose their statement mosaic flooring and how to get the look.
Meet Sarah
Hi, I’m Sarah and I live in Cambridge along with my husband and two young children. We purchased our home a bit over a year ago and although it’s in serious need of some love, the plan is for this to be our 'forever home'. A bit of pressure when you’ve never done a full house renovation before!
Tell us about your family home bathroom reno
We knew when we purchased our home that the shower was leaking, and the space was laid out badly for a family bathroom. It had no storage and a tiny corner sink. So we decided that was a good place to start. Turns out, the leaking shower was by far the least of our problems, welcome to 100yr old homes!
What was the vision you had for this space?
We wanted to do things right, especially because it was the first room we were tackling. Also, we knew this would set the style for the rest of our home. I wanted something that sat between the classic Villa look and simple and modern, and I think we've pulled this off!
How did you come to select your flooring?
We were recommended Harrisons by my brother and sister in law who had recently replaced their flooring. I wanted to use someone local, and Harrisons come to you, so it made things easy.
At the time of the consult, the bathroom was completely stripped back to a shell. It was hard to imagine what the space would look like but I knew I wanted to go with a classic mosaic tile look.
Our local Harrisons business owner Devon and I looked through different sizes and styles. We were after a cost effective, quality product that was of course the best look for the space. Unfortunately renovations tend to come with a budget! The one I ended up loving is Harrisons Presto 200, Evora, luxury vinyl flooring. It was a good price and came in the best size for our space.
What was important for you when choosing the perfect flooring for this space?
This bathroom was always going to be the main bathroom. We’ve since had plans drawn up to add an ensuite, but this will be the bathroom that the kids use. I always wanted to use vinyl flooring in the bathroom because I felt like it would be more forgiving and hard wearing. Our house is also a standard old cold home, so vinyl would be a bit warmer on the feet in winter than tiles.

Do you have any top tips for those that are embarking on a build or renovation?
I’m definitely still figuring this out, but I think my best piece of advice would be to find a builder who you get along with. I’m pretty hands on with the reno myself and my builder has been very accommodating of that. Pinterest is a treasure trove of ideas, if you are a rookie like me it's a great place to draw inspiration from.
