Take a look at Emma's new build
The long awaited completion and final reveal is here! Those of you who have followed along with Emma's building journey, know that she has gone the extra mile with every detail of this project.
From open floor plan layouts to creating the ideal spot to entertain, relax, and simply enjoy, everything has been carefully selected.
We spoke with Emma to learn about key design elements, balancing layout, and, of course, helpful tips when it comes to building or renovating any home.
Here's what Emma had to say
When putting your building plans together, how did you decide on layout?
Initially, the lounge was going to be facing the outdoor space. Early on, I saw a photo where the kitchen island opened out onto outdoor living with wide-opening stacker doors and I loved it! It was different from what I had seen before.
With this layout, the kitchen has become the entertaining hub in this home with seamless indoor/outdoor flow. It also meant the lounge became a cosy space that was slightly tucked away which I love.
What curtains did you choose for this space?
Are entertainment and flooring durability important factors for you?
Yes absolutely! Having practical flooring in entertaining spaces was a must!
I opted to use hard flooring right throughout the kitchen, dining room and living room. This allows for open-concept living, which makes entertaining spaces feel much larger. Carpeting the lounge would have visually divided the space, and I wanted everything to feel connected. Having hard flooring throughout also creates the perfect environment for entertaining the entire family.
What’s the trick to making such an open and grand space feel so cosy?
I do think having full length sheer curtains always makes a space feel soft and elegant. They really finish off this space and make it feel luxurious against the dark wood-grain colour scheme in the kitchen. It's a balancing act of selecting natural materials and finishes, while still making sure the dark kitchen felt soft and inviting. I'm really happy with how it turned out.
What are some tips for people looking to renovate or starting a new build?
- Do a lot of research, and save all of your inspirational photos into an album, so it’s easy to find when making decisions! Having an album can also help you clarify what you want to achieve.
- Decide what your top priorities are, and base your decisions on how you want to live and what's important to you!
