Top Flooring Tips Before You Renovate
If you’re planning some renovations or are ready to start thinking about flooring, Anita Shirley, Harrisons in-house interior designer, has put together some top tips to help you with your flooring choice:
-
Always renovate from the FLOOR UP
Flooring should be the first product you choose as its one of the largest surface areas. Choose your flooring first but lay it last so it’s protected from any other renovations within your home.
-
Take advantage of viewing carpet and vinyl samples in different spaces in your home
A carpet or vinyl sample will look different in your home as opposed to a showroom.
-
Don’t be afraid to choose a slightly darker carpet colour
Carpets generally appear around 20% lighter on the floor when installed compared to a small sample.
-
Consider the effect colours have on your space
Darker colours absorb light and can make a room appear smaller, lighter colours reflect the light and create a sense of spaciousness.
-
Learn the characteristics of the different fibre types
Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN), Wool, Triexta, Polyester & Polyprop. SDN is currently the most popular because of its fade and stain resistance qualities.
-
When planning your interior colour scheme stay to the same colour tones on your flooring, wall colour & window treatments.
Harrisons have matched all their carpets to paint colours and even curtain fabrics, helping you avoid costly design errors.
-
Never underestimate the importance of underlay
Carpet underlay absorbs all the wear and tear increasing the longevity of your carpet. A high density underlay will feel luxurious underfoot, increase sound insulation, reduces heat loss and acts as a dust barrier by reducing the flow of air, thereby reducing the dust particles carried by the air.
