How to remove scratches from vinyl flooring – person holding wax

Hybrid and vinyl flooring are great options when you want your home to look amazing on a budget. Vinyl and hybrid floors are typically low maintenance and durable, but accidents do happen, and sometimes they can be scratched. This blog post will explore how to remove scratches from vinyl flooring. Read on to discover our expert tips.

Avoiding Scratches

The best way to deal with scratches is to avoid them happening in the first place! Here are a few things you can do to minimise the likelihood of scratching your vinyl or hybrid flooring.

  • Put felt pads on the bottom of any heavy furniture. These simple little pieces of felt can prevent scratches and dents. If you need to move your furniture around, lift it instead of dragging it across the floor.
  • Have a mat to wipe shoes off before entering the house, or have a no-shoes inside rule. Small rocks and other abrasive materials can easily sneak in on the bottom of your shoes and damage your floors.
  • Keep your pets’ nails trimmed. Excited dog paws can cause damage to your floors.

Preparing to Fix a Scratch

First, if you are repairing a scratch on your vinyl or hybrid flooring, you must ensure that the area around it is clean. Dish soap and warm water make a perfect cleaning solution, which will cut through grease and dirt so that the area is ready to be repaired. Be sure to use a soft cloth or sponge to clean the area. Abrasive cleaning materials or vigorous scrubbing could make the damage worse. Allow the area to dry completely before beginning repairs.

Repairing the Scratch

Luckily, removing scratches on vinyl and hybrid flooring is straightforward. You have two main options: use a specific floor repair kit or household items such as car wax to get the job done. Buying a repair kit means you can get everything you need all at once, and it often comes with different colour waxes to find a true colour match. But if you already have car wax and sandpaper at home, they will work just as well!

Start by sanding the spot with medium to high-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough edges on the scratch. Finish sanding with 800-grit sandpaper, working in small circles to ensure the surface is smooth and even with the surrounding area.

To smooth everything out and bring the shine back into your floor, use a soft cloth to work a little bit of your chosen wax into the scratch, and polish until the floor has reached your desired level of shine. It’s as easy as that!
