Interior design guide - Flooring tips from Sarah and Caitlin
Flooring is the backdrop and sets the tone for the rest of your home. When renovating or building new, it's important to think about what you need from your flooring. Durability, for kids and pets? But also you want to achieve a timeless look, perfect for interior styling and hosting friends and family.
We asked Sarah and Caitlin what you need to know when choosing your new flooring, plus a few of their personal faves!
What are the popular trends in flooring you are seeing at the moment?
During winter, we find customers are more inclined to install carpet in most of the house rather than wood flooring. However, wood flooring definitely comes back in the warmer months. We are finding a lot more interest in luxurious and sustainable wool, especially textured loop piles which offer a more natural colour palette.
What is a top tip for someone interested in updating their flooring?
It's important for people to actually sit down and think about what is important to them and assess who is living in the home (kids, pets etc). They have to know an approx budget so we can offer flooring options that work for them and their price range. Having some idea on colour, and what they would like the end result to look like would be ideal (pinterest is our best friend!!) - this gives us a bit of an idea on their vision.
If you were to get new flooring today, what would you choose and why?
Caitlin: Dark natural laminate hard flooring throughout all the living areas. I would choose it because it's really hard wearing & less likely to fade as I have quite a lot of direct sunlight. In the bedrooms, I would put a nice light chunky wool loop.
Sarah: Natural engineered timber throughout all the living areas. I love the natural look and it’s very quiet to walk on. For bedrooms, I’d go for a plush, thick and heavy solution dyed nylon carpet.
What are the most popular colours you are seeing?
Currently, neutral tones. People seem to be stepping back from dark greys. In laminate hard flooring - same sort of thing. People are wanting realistic oak kinds.
What is your personal favourite interior design style?
We both love wood throughout the whole house apart from the bedrooms, which we love a thick chunky loop in! Colours really vary depending what other furniture/wall colours etc.
The flooring dream team of Tauranga
What do you love about working in the Tauranga area?
We love the coastal beachy vibe. Having lived here for most of our lives it's just home and feels comfortable to us.
What are the benefits of working close to each other?
Our customers love it when they realise we're a mother/daughter team. It's fantastic to have the support of each other, we can bounce ideas off each other. We try to go out once a month which enables us to come up with new ways to interact with customers and a great way to keep each other motivated in this fast paced business. Sharing areas/installers has always been a benefit as we can support each other and the installer even if it's not our own job.
