Step inside Emma's new custom townhouse
From the ground up Emma has poured over every detail from the high ceilings to soft loop pile carpet. Her newly built home is full of character while being the cosy haven she dreamt of. Focusing on her Master bedroom, we talked to Emma to find out how she made her vision come to life!
Here's what Emma had to say
Why did you decide to build?
I had a great opportunity with the land my home sits on, it was huge, and I planned to subdivide and sell the section. However, I quickly realised it was the perfect opportunity for a first build. This townhouse was built for my mum to live in, so it was exciting for both of us first-timers!
What was your vision for your home's interior design?
A townhouse that had soul, style and a great first impression. I opted to go modern, with personality.
The high vaulted ceilings immediately draw you in from the front door leading through to the rest of the home. This open concept was considered when designing the entire layout of the home floor plan.
With that in mind, how did you want your master bedroom to be?
A master bedroom, in my opinion, should always be a wee haven that is relaxing, calming, and enjoyable to be in. That was the goal! Using full length curtains in soft sheer fabrics always softens a space and makes it ultra calming.
How did you decide on which carpet to go with?
I'm big on textures and layering when it comes to styling, it brings soul to a space and elevates it. It was a no-brainer to use a loop pile carpet. The texture looks amazing, it's super soft and just takes the space up a notch giving a more of a luxe feel. I have used Harrisons wool loop pile carpet before, so I wanted to give nylon a try to see how it compares. So far, I love both equally!
Were there any considerations when choosing your flooring?
For the bedroom, I had already decided on a loop pile, so it was just a matter of what colour. It all came down to practicality and that I wanted a colour that would brighten and cosy up the space. I find that adding a slightly warmer toned carpet can soften the room, especially if you have white walls.
How did you decide on what curtains, blinds or shutters to go with?
Choosing the right curtains can instantly make any room feel more luxurious. curtains that provide privacy get a big thumbs up from me, so choosing double track curtains with sheers on the front and block out lining behind means privacy while still allowing plenty of light in during the day. Having the block out allows a soft appearance of the sheers on top while keeping your home warm at night.
I took the curtains to the full height of the ceiling and the full width of the window walls. This is key to making any space feel much larger, so we did that wherever possible. I also added small shutters above the bed. Due to the size and location of the window, shutters was an easy decision. They offer an elevated look with clean lines and adjustable filtered light. So it was perfect for this spot.
For those who are embarking on a build or a home renovation, what are your top tips?
1. Plan plan plan. Right from the start when you are considering your floor plans, imagine yourself in each space, how does it function? Where will you have hard flooring vs carpet and where will the transition be?
2. Remember your window coverings tracks always go well past the physical window frame, so making sure there is enough space either side of the window for tracks to go up is important too.
3. Lastly, have fun. Take it all in and enjoy the process! It is so rewarding seeing your ideas come to life. Suddenly, it's all over and you'll want to start the next renovation project! I know I am...
